It is exciting to apply for a job that really interests you. In making your application, there are a number of points for you to observe.
In your letter of application, aim to say just enough to introduce yourself. If you are answering an advertisement, any information for what it asks must, of course, be given. This will usually cover your school record, further education and training. You may also be asked to give the names of one or two persons to supply reference. For this purpose you should choose people who know you well enough about your character and ability; and you should also ask for their permission to be
8
named as referees. It will depend on circumstances (情况) how much you can usefully add about yourself. Your purpose is to bring to the notice of the boss any good reason why you rather than any of the other applicants (申请人) should be chosen for the job. If therefore you feel you have any special skill for the work or, for example, any particular interest in the line of business, let this be known.
Finally, there is your use of language. You cannot go wrong if you keep your sentences and paragraphs short, making sure the sense is clear and well expressed. Choose plain words so long as they can express your meaning.
Choose the best answers.

Step V Reciting
T: Here are two short passages. Try your best to recite them. It will be useful for your composition.
My Ideal Job (I)
When a person is asked what his ideal job is, he may answer quickly, an actor, a doctor, etc. But when it comes to me, I feel at a loss. There are all kinds of work in the world, but I can’t decide which kind I like best.
In my opinion, my ideal job must fully utilize (make full use of ) my intelligence and knowledge. I have been studying for so many years. The main purpose is to prepare myself for my future job. If most of my knowledge can’t be used, no doubt it is a great waste. I am not afraid of a demanding and challenging job, for it is the best opportunity to examine my capability. As a result, it stimulates me to make greater efforts and to achieve more.

My Ideal Job (II)
A relaxed, harmonious relationship among the companions is ideal, for it is bound to improve the efficiency of work. I can’t imagine how they can cooperate if they can’t get along well, not to mention any achievement.
Also, I wish my job will help people directly, thus the sense of achievement will make me work harder.
Step VI Homework
1. Recite the two passages.
2. Write a short passage about the question: Are there any jobs which women can’t do? Why can’t they do them?
