When my father was a boy, he had a dog named Laddie. Laddie stayed constantly by my dad’s side---fishing, playing ball, and even following him to school. In fact, my grandmother had a habit of waiting until my father had arrived at school before sending Laddie outside. However, this was no problem for Laddie because he would simply follow his boy’s smell and track him all the way to Howard Junior High School.
Arriving after all the doors closed, Laddie would sit outside the school and wait patiently. Eventually, someone would open a door and Laddie would slip in after him. Once inside, the dog would walk from room to room until he found his master. Of course, Dad’s teacher would immediately demand that the dog be removed. “School is no place for dogs,” he would angrily say. My father
would obey, leading Laddie outside and firmly commanding, “Go home!” Every time this happened, though, Laddie would soon reappear under my father’s desk. Finally, Dad’s teacher relented, and from that point on, whenever Laddie appeared in class, Dad would say, “Lie down,” and the dog would lie quietly under the desk while he boy wet on with his work.
Years later, my father went to join his five brothers in World War II, but Laddie continued to atted school, lying quietly each day at the feet of my dad’s younger brother, Dick. There is nothing in the U. S. quite like Black Friday. Before midnight on Thursday, in malls across the U. S., people start queuing up outside the locked entrances of stores, making longer and longer lines, holding coupons(优惠券), sipping coffee and hot chocolate, rubbing their hands and stamping (跺脚) their feet for warmth, excitedly chatting, and waiting for the clerks to open the door when the time arrives.
Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, “has become in recent decades a special American holiday”, said the International Business Times. Indeed, up to 147 million Black Friday shoppers were expected to put up with the dark of night and the elbows(手肘)of other shoppers so that they could bring home some bargains, according to the US National Retail Federation. But why does the shopping festival have such a name?
The name was first used in Philadelphia in the 1970s. The streets and sidewalks of the city became so packed with traffic and crowds on the day after Thanksgiving Day that the local police did not look forward to it. Because of this, they called the day “Black Friday”, said The Huffington Post. However, others believe that Black Friday takes its name from the fact that because
of the increase in sales on the day, shops are able for the first time in the year to move out of the “red” – that is, debt – and into the “black”, or profit. Businesses, of course, try to take advantage of this day. A decade ago, retailers (零售商) opened at 5 or 6 am. Now, many of the big stores open at midnight.
People really seem to like the whole experience of queuing up before midnight, “for it isn’t just about the bargains”, noted CNN. “For many shoppers, it’s just fun to be part of a large crowd. Those who go to the malls at midnight are driven by the same thing that makes a million people get together in Times Square each New Year’s Eve.” 29. Which of the following statements about Black Friday is TRUE?
A. It is a special day in the US on which government hands out coupons to customers. B. It is a shopping festival in the US that falls on the second Friday after Thanksgiving. C. It has been a traditional American holiday since the founding of the nation. D. It is an opportunity for Americans to get things they want at a much lower price. 30. B. have a lot of complaints about the service of the retail clerks C. have great fun as part of the waiting crowd D. have to wait until 5 to 6 a.m. to start shopping 31.What is the article mainly about? A. The shopping habits of Americans.
B. An introduction to the origin and influences of Black Friday. C. Tips on how to get good bargains on Black Friday. D. People’s mixed feelings toward Black Friday.

Suppose you wanted to take a day off to join a camping trip with your friends but your manager refused and forced you to work that day. In this situation you’ll suffer the feeling of frustration. You can also become frustrated if you’re faced with large piles of work, but you don’t have enough time to finish them.
Unavoidable short-term bursts of frustration aren’t likely to have a long-term effect on you, but what if something was blocking the path to your long-term goals? You want to reach a goal
or achieve something but you don’t have any idea on how to achieve it. How will you feel? Recent studies have shown that one of the reasons why people become depressed is that they haven’t cleared their frustration for a long time.
Frustration also leads to another result. If your manager forced you to work on your day off, you may find yourself dealing aggressively with your colleagues or you may even project this aggression on your kids when you go home. Of course you can’t shout at your manager and that’s why your aggression remains until you empty it somewhere else.
Generally speaking, stubborn people are more likely to be influenced by frustration than anyone else. It’s their inability to let go of things that increases their frustration. Therefore, take advantage of the new situation and think about if there are any other methods you could use to reach the same goal. Be like water and take the shape of whatever container you are in. Find another way, such as communicating with those you trust. Frustration is sometimes the result of thinking that there is only one way to do something and this is the complete opposite of flexibility. 32.The first paragraph implies that frustration usually happens when . A. you are occupied with a large amount of work B. you’re fed up with doing the same work C. something stops you reaching your goal D. you aren’t given enough time to relax 33. From the passage, we learn that .
A. some workers shouted at their managers when they got frustrated B. short-term frustration doesn’t necessarily have a long-term effect C. frustrated people usually have an aggressive attitude towards their family D. setting a short-term goal will prevent people from feeling frustrated 34. According to the passage, who are more likely to be influenced by frustration? A. People who hide their feelings from anyone else. B. People who don’t like to communicate with others. C. People who always follow others’ instructions. D. People who never make a change in their opinion.
35. The writer mentions water in the last paragraph to . A. tell people why they need to become creative
B. stress the importance of flexibility to people C. show people how to make full use of resources D. inform people of changing their goals frequently 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

For example, what am I worrying about? What can I do about it? Here is what I’m going to do about it. After carefully weighing all the facts, you can calmly come to a decision. Act on that decision.
39 How can you break the worry habit before it breaks you? Crowd worry out of your mind by keeping busy. Plenty of action is one of the best ways to cure worry. 40 If you know a situation is beyond your power, say to yourself: “ It is so; it can’t be otherwise.” Don’t permit little things to ruin your happiness.
