People know the dangers of fires. It’s good for a family to learn how to prepare for a fire. Here are some suggestions:

Put a smoke alarm in the house. Smoke from a fire causes the alarm to go off. The alarm makes a loud sound. The sound tells everyone to leave the house at once.

Make escape(逃跑) plans. They should know all the ways out of the house. If there is a fire, everyone follows the plan to get out. Part of the plan is to check all the windows to make sure they can be opened easily.

But fire extinguishers(灭火器) in the house. Everyone in the family should know how to use them.

Practice for a fire. They do fire practice because they teach children about fire safety. Everyone in the family should know the following fire rules.

*Don’t open a hot door! The fire can grow more quickly if you open the door.

*Stay close to the floor! Smoke can be more dangerous than fire. The best air is near the floor because smoke rises.

*What will you do if your hair or clothes start to burn? First, stop! Don’t run! The fire burns faster because of more air. Drop! Fall to the floor. Then roll! Turning over and over will make the fire go out. Put a blanket(毯子)around you to keep air away from the fire that may still be on you. There are many possible causes for fires. When I was seven years old, my family made me an ant farm. First, we put clean sand in a thin glass box. Then we waited for the ants to arrive.

After the ants were in the glass farm, they started to make tunnels (地道). I was amazed that each one knew exactly what to do. Each had its own job.

On the fifth day a tragedy(悲剧) happened. I put my face so close to the glass farm that I knocked it over. All the tunnels fell down. Although the ants remained alive after their earthquake,

0 0one by one they began to die. I was scared as I watched them give up building their tunnels to carry the bodies to a corner of the farm.

My mother said that the ants were dying of sadness. They simply could not stand that their tunnels were gone.

Although much time has passed, I still think of that ant farm. Mom had hoped it would teach me about the natural world, but it taught me much more.

Over the years, I came to realize the importance of teamwork. Working together, the ants were able to make an amazing world for themselves. I also learned that they should be admired(钦佩) for their hard work.

But there was an even larger lesson that I did not realize until recently: Adversity(逆境) is a natural part of life, and must be accepted. Unlike the ants, we cannot give up when we are sad. We have to realize that if a tunnel is gone, we must build another. Give up, I say, is not a good choice.

Nowadays, a new method is used to decide who the top students in school are. The best students are those who not only get high marks, but also follow the rules and the behavior standards(标准) for middle school students. Here are some of the new and standards.

Tell the truth. Have you ever copied someone else’s work on an exam? If you have, then don’t do it again! That’s not something an honest student should do. If you have played computer games for two hours in your room, don’t tell your parents you were doing homework.

Alex knew colors and shapes. He learned about 150 English words. With his language ability he made himself known as perhaps the world’s most famous talking bird.

0 0But Alex, a parrot, died two weeks ago when he was 31. Irene, a psychologist(心理学家) at Harvard University, studied and worked with the parrot for nearly 30 years.

In 1977, Irene, then an excellent student in chemistry at Harvard, bought Alex from a pet store. At that time, scientists were not quite sure whether birds could learn to communicate with humans.

But using the methods of teaching, Irene helped Alex to learn about 150 words, and to count small numbers, as well as colors and shapes.

In experiments, Irene would give Alex a small reward(奖励) ,like a grape. Alex learned to ask for the grape by watching what the trainer was doing to get it. The researchers then worked with the bird to help him with pronunciation.

Alex showed a surprising ability to learn. For example, when he was shown a blue paper circle, he could tell what color the paper was, what shape it was, and—after touching it, --what it was made of.

Like other parrots, he also picked up some words when staying in the lab, like “calm down” and “good morning”. He could also show his happiness and sadness.

Even before the week he died, Alex was working with Irene on difficult words. As she put him into his cage for the night that Thursday, Irene said that Alex looked at her and said, “You be good. See you tomorrow. I love you.” ( ) 1. Alex is the name of ______.

If we want to deal with the association(交往) between boys and girls properly, here are some “ dos and don’ts” for you to follow.

Keep a normal and healthy state of mind. Our schools and classes are made up of boys and girls. It is very natural for the boys and girls to make friends with each other. We should make as many friends as possible. We should keep touch with the other sex(性别) in public instead of in secret.

Don’t be too nervous or too shy. If you are a shy person, you can also find a way out. First of all, you can make friends with the students who have the same interest and hobby as you. As both of you have much in common, you may have much to talk about. If you keep doing like that, little by little, you will gladly find you are also as free to express yourself as others.

Don’t fall into the ditch of early love. The boys and girls at a adolescence(青春期) are rich in

0 0feeling. They are easy to regard the friendship as a sign of love and fall in love with each other at an early age. In my opinion, early love is a green apple that can’t be eaten. An apple won’t taste sweet until it is fully ripe. Boys and girls at middle school are too young to carry the heavy duty of love. Do keep out of early love.

Believe it or not. The day you will be able to go to the moon is coming soon. You will be able to go into space in a space shuttle. It will take about three days for the shuttle to go from the Earth to the moon.

The shuttle will fly to a space station. You will be able to stay there for a short rest and then you will go on to the moon.

Then, you will be able to jump out of the shuttle, but you mustn’t take off your spacesuit because it is very hot in the daytime and very cold at night on the moon. The spacesuit will help your body adjust to the temperature there. The moon is much smaller than the Earth. The things on the moon are lighter than those on the Earth. You can jump high every time you take a step. You will find that it is never tiring to walk on the moon. You won’t need to take an umbrella or a raincoat with you since there is no rain or wind on the moon. You’ll hear nothing because there is no air on the moon. And there are no animals or any other living things there.

The moon moves slowly, so one day on the moon is as long as two weeks on the Earth and one night is just as long as two weeks on the Earth. Everybody says that youth is the best time of our lives. Being young means romance, love and new discoveries, but it is also the most difficult time, because you have to make some very important decisions, which will influence your future life.

Things are not easy nowadays even for adults, but for teenagers, who have to find their own place in society, it’s even difficult. It is necessary not only to adapt to society, but also to be confident of your position in five, ten or even twenty years time.

For the future it is important to have a good job. In order to get a really good job, you have to be well educated.

Emotional problems for young people can be very important, too. The first teenager problem is that “nobody understands me”. Some parents often continue to treat their children as little children when they are starting to consider themselves to be adults.

There are also some global problems. Young people in all countries are facing these problems. Let’s start with smoking. According to studies, at the age of 16, almost 72% of all boys and 37% of all girls in Russia have already tried smoking. Smoking is not a natural need. Drugs are also a serious problem. Students know the names of drugs well enough. 32% say they have tried drugs at least once, mainly because they were having fun, their friends influenced them to, they wanted to relax or they wanted to seem “cool”. That’s too bad.

So, you see, problems do happen and they can’t be ignored. We should pay much attention to them.
