摘要：To translate Japanese having no morphological distinction between singularand plural forms into English having a morphological distinction between the two, forinstance, the dictionary unit (6) includes semantic information indicative of the pluralnumber, and the translation unit (5) syntactically and semantically translates Japaneseinto English as follows: a Japanese sentence is morphologically analyzed into basicmorphemes by an inflection information dictionary (6a); lexical syntactic information ofthe Japanese basic morphemes are retrieved from a word/phrase dictionary (6b); theJapanese sentence is syntactically analyzed into an intermediate structure by Japanesesyntactic analysis grammar to clarify modification relationship between two words; theJapanese intermediate structure is semantically transferred into an English intermediatestructure by structure transfer grammar; a concept data of a noun (e.g. \"book\") whichincludes FEATURE : NUMBER = PLURAL is formed when the noun is modified by anadjective (e.g. \"many\") indicative of the plural number; an English sentence structure issyntactically generated from the intermediate structure and by English syntacticgeneration grammar; and lastly an English morphemes are generated by morphologicalgeneration grammar to change \"book\" into \"books\".
